External Mail Server (LiveOffice or ISP)

Your network does not contain a mail server. Your email is hosted on an external shared mail server. This server may be hosted by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or it may be a cloud-based solution (e.g. LiveOffice). Your provider may or may not use anti-virus/spam filtering.
Pros and Cons of a Shared Server with External Filtering
Pros
|
Cons
|
- Features can vary widely depending on the provider. This can give your company many options to customize the filtering to fit your needs.
- Frees up your local bandwidth and network resources. This is especially advantageous for small businesses, since it reduces overhead.
- No need to perform updates and troubleshoot hardware or software issues.
|
- Your current provider may not provide options for customization (e.g. set filtering levels, view quarantined messages, quickly identify and deliver false positives).
- Server resources are shared between multiple users.
- Depending on the quality of your provider's filtering, spamming activities by other users could cause your shared server to be blacklisted, which would cause some emails sent by your company to be rejected by the recipient.
